Amazon enters the aquatics industry via Wag.com

Amazon, one of the largest internet retailers has recently announced their new site, wag.com. The site is catering to pet owners and claims  that “over 10,000 products for Dogs, Cats, Birds, Fish, Reptiles and Small Animals” will be available at launch. This is a significant investment on the part of Amazon, since the failing of Pets.com this is the first major internet retailer to get invested in the pet industry.  The perks from Wag sound familiar:

1) Free 1-2 day shipping both ways
2) 365-day return policy.

For now, they stay freshwater only with products like Seachem, biOrb, and Tetra. We don’t foresee this having impact to our reef industry, Wag might intend to target reef keeping products after they have initially launched. It will take time before their merchandising and product managers discover just how this reef building industry works. The calm before the storm.

Update: As alert reader Lou Schiavo brought out, they do have Hydor Slim Skimmers online.

Nothing really groundbreaking as far as their fish selection goes. Their small animal, cat, dog, etc., is a little more complete. Having been in online retailing for about 10 years now, this wouldn’t look like an appealing competitor. I guess we’ll see how aggressively the site is marketed. Definitely has the potential to cut into existing online retailers margins, but they’re going to have to really work on the fish section if they have any hope of gaining customers from the existing online fish retailers.

They have protein skimmers by hydor. Maybe they will cater to saltwater later.

i feel this is a double edge sword . i have been on both sides of the fence on deals to mass merchants.
its great to write a large purchase order to these huge companies, but perceived product value is ruined by the aggressive low pricing.

Neat! Thanks for posting this. Limited selection aside, Amazon is taking a market-changing step. Wag.com has a nice interface, and I’m sure they’ll be able to increase their inventory once things get going. Very much potential. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.
