Ecotech Radion LED trademarked by the makers of the Vortech

trademark registration for the Ecotech 'Radion' LED light

The Ecotech Radion LED is a newly registered trademark from Ecotech Marine, makers of the Vortech propeller water pump. For years Ecotech Marine just made water pumps and a battery for it, but this year we saw a completely new product from them with the Ecotech Elements super glue so it’s no surprise to see the trademark appear for the Ecotech Radion LED light. We reached out to Tim Marks, Director of Production for Ecotech Marine regarding the registration of Radion LED trademark.

“EcoTech’s policy is not to comment on products which we may or may not be actively developing.” Tim Marks

The trademark for a Radion LED light was first filed by Ecotech Marine with the USPTO back in March 10, 2011. With so much engineering under the hood of the Vortech pumps and their wireless Ecosmart controllers, the Radion LED trademark probably doesn’t represent a small novelty like the battery backup or the coral glue; we expect Ecotech Marine to dive headfirst into the deep end of the pool of aquarium LED lighting. We have no doubt that Ecotech Marine is interested in building an LED light for reef aquariums, but there’s no telling how far along they may be and what it will be like.

Perhaps the Radion LED from Ecotech will have touch sensitive controls like the AI Nano, RGB LEDs like the Mame Ecolight or super high efficiency Cree and Phillips diodes like the Maxspect Mazarra. In either case, if and when Ecotech Marine does release the Radion LED, the first place we’d expect to see it as at the upcoming MACNA conference in Iowa. Stay tuned . . .

Very interesting that the trademark actually specifies the Radion LED as a plant grow light.  Are there still issues with selling LED fixtures specifically for the aquarium trade?

The Radion is 50% radioactive gas and 50% superfast graphics card

Sounds like the LED for me!

Seriously, I’m surprised there aren’t more comments. Knowing Ecotech it’s unlikely these will be run of the mill lights. Capactive buttons are OK I guess, but I’m expecting they’ll connect together wirelessly like the newer Vortechs. Put a few together and they’ll automatically configure themselves for left-to-right sunrise effects, moon cycles, etc without any help from the user. If you’re the kind of user who does want to micromanage I’m sure it will interface with a controller or perhaps just a smartphone. Want a storm? The lights dim, the lightning starts and your Vortechs automatically ramp up.

    Who else wants to speculate?

Is it because of the patent issues, I wonder?

I’m guessing it will have a fan :)

I think there will be a ‘clap’ on/off switch and 7.1 surround sound for the thunder that goes along with the storm. O_o

When is reefbuilders going to do an article on the Orbitech patent issue? Seems like people are ignoring it now?

Thats exactly what I’ve been waiting for. Storm mode that syncs with vortechs. Syched. Super Syched.

5.1 is enough for me.  Having a thunder sound synched with the lightning isn’t a bad idea.  Most hobbyists would think it’s silly, but for a lot of service tanks the “cool” factor means more to a client than a $500 coral.

after they completely changed how pumps get power into the water, I’m either expecting fixtures that float in mid air with no hardware, or some kind of fiber optics that route light from a fixture under your cabinet into the display.

No matter what they do, I think everyone is expecting so much that they better seriously take it up a notch or we will all be disappointed.

Yes thank you like that one. However that article is over a year old and with company’s like Acan and Maxspect blatantly violating the patent I am curious if anything has changed. I am sorry If I am derailing the intent of this article :)

Not sure if this is new or old news on the Patent, but we were (legally)  informed that as of the beginning of february this year the patents were all renewed. Since then the Patents have been upheld when the patent board reviewed them

As it stands as of last month the Patent were still very much alive and kicking, however what Orbitec decide to do with them is anyones guess.

You can do it with the Apex controller :)
