2011 Aquarium LED lighting showdown — Round 2 of the Reader’s Choice ready for votes!

By on Jan 04, 2012

Put round one in the books and get your voting fingers ready for the second round of the 2011 Aquarium LED showdown. As we mentioned before, we picked our 32 top stories on new aquarium LED lighting that appeared in 2011 and paired them up in our first ever Reef Builders reader’s choice tournament bracket (click here for a full-size image of the bracket). As we did in the first round, voting will be open for 24 hours closing at 12 p.m. PST on January 4.

Reef Brite XHO LED vs. Ecoxotic Panorama Pro

The Reef Brite XHO LED definitely has some power, increasing output over previous Reef Brite modules. The Ecoxotic Panorama Pro is definitely more robust, has more colors than the previous generation and even has an RGB version.

Maxspect Mazarra vs. Eco-Lamps Full Spectrum LED

There are some robust features of the Maxspect Mazarra making this one a top contender. The Eco-Lamps Full Spectrum LED is trying to tackle a problematic area in LED lighting around having a full light spectrum represented.

Pacific Sun Metis Hypereon vs. Sunbrite Slimline S

The Pacific Sun Metis Hyperion definitely is setting the bar high with Cree XM-L and UV LEDs in a sleek and stylish fixture. The Sunbrite Slimline S is a sleek looking fixture, tri-color LEDs, has a great price and oh yeah, a remote control!

Kessil A150W vs. Evolution LED

The Kessil A150W is definitely one pendant to keep your eye on — different colors, proprietary chips and a great price! The Evolution LED from ReefKoi is a nice step up from the black box with 2W LEDs with two shades each of white and blue and totally dimmable.

Sfiligoi Astra vs. Ecoxotic Retro 2D

The Sfiligoi Astra is a sleek and slim looking fixture for smaller aquariums or using a few over a larger tank. For those of you looking for clean aesthetics in your light, this is one to look at. The Ecoxotic Panorama Retro 2D is a great way to add LED lighting to your existing canopy or to use as a hanging light. The great feature now is the ability to dim these lamps.

Ecotech Radion XR30 vs. Vertex Illumilux

The Ecotech Radion XR30 hit the LED with plenty of buzz and so far the reviews have been pretty favorable for the XR30 as Ecotech Marine starts venturing out more.  The Vertex Illumilux is a nice, modular strip with impressive construction we were quite impressed with when we got our hands on it

JBJ Unibody LED vs. Ecoxotic 120W Cannon

The JBJ Unibody LED is a great direction the company is taking to take the manufacturer beyond just the casual hobbyist. New refinements have made the light even better. Taking heat management to a whole new level, the Ecoxotic 120W Cannon has more power and is lighter thanks to efficient use of heat pipes to aid in cooling.

AquaIllumination Nano vs. Nano Box

The AI Nano is one that sets the bar pretty high no matter if its a nano or a full-sized fixture. Streamlined and refined, we were impressed with the final release version of the AI Nano. The NanoBox is one nice looking modular, entry-level fixture with four controllable channels of light plus active cooling.

Your comparing the Vertex Illumilux, a non-controllable, one or two spectrum light strip with the Ecotech Radion XR30, a fully controllable, multi spectrum, fan cooled fixture? That’s like comparing a Volvo with a Bentley, not surprised who wins here.

We all know its a Ecotech V’s Pac Sun final. :)

I agree 100 percent with Christine. It should have been the Vertex Illumina that was paired up here.

but then the radion might have competition, can’t have it looking bad…

Maybe people should read the article and comments from the Staff. ONLY LEDs that were RELEASED in 2011 are in the poll. Since the Vertex came out before then, it is NOT on the poll. Same goes for the AI Sol.

I don’t see why they run this vote/contest apart from glorifying one particular unit. Most of these match ups aren’t even the same price, aimed at the same type of needs, etc. Hope they get well paid for that, they lose me as a reader.

It’s all a popularity contest anyways.  Do you really think anyone voting studies each light and then votes?  They vote based off which name looks more familiar from Reef Central lol.

Can’t wait to see the results as I am in the market for something very soon!

It may be a popularity contest but the AI Nano deserves a bit of praise. The thing looks great over a nano tank and performs extremely well.
