Coral food recipe causes insane feeding response in Frédeau’s reef tank

By on Oct 29, 2012

This coral feeding video of Frédeau’s reef (aka Gloupe) shows just how impressive coral feeding responses can be when the right ingredients are used. We all know you are suppose to feed your corals for maximum growth rates and color and in the past couple of years the popularity of feeding corals has exploded, with dozens of different brands, and foods to prove it. However, it still seems that a lot of aquarists often forgo feeding. After seeing this video however, you might want to change those habits. All the LPS in the system just seem to explode the moment the food hits the water, and even SPS extend their feeding tentacles. Check out the results and the recipe for yourself after the break.

The coral food recipe fed in this video includes the following:

    • five blended mussles,
    • five blended clams
    • five blended prawns
    • five blended oysters
    • A capsule of Reef Booster Probidio
    • Fauna Marin pellets
    • Reef Pearls
    • Spirulina Powder
    • cyclopeeze
    • fish eggs
    • mysis

It appears that Frédeau is dosing carbon sources to his system, so 2ml of Vodka and a table spoon of grounded sugar are also added. We can just imagine how saturated this coral food recipe is with lipids, and how much it will affect the skimmer, but the corals definitely seem to love it. Because of this we definitely recommend starting with lower dosages if you decide to start feeding your corals, as the last thing you want to happen is nutrient levels shooting through the roof and causing unintended imbalances.

I don’t understand what’s so new about blending your own recipe. Lots of people do this and probably get similar results. What makes this recipe different. Is there one or two ingredients that we haven’t been aware of.?

I seem to recall hearing of a particular brand of “chow” for the aquarium that it’s the lipids or oils in it that cause this feeding response whether or not they actually get any “food” from the encounter.

That said, almost sounds like throwing some cioppino into a blender and feed your tank with it :D

    Hello,

That is indeed a famous and “old” recipe, but an update is good for make it reknown by new aquarists or others who didn’t get the info before or forgot about it. Video is now much more shared on the network, that will make the recipe more famous, as people, years ago, shared only photos or blog notes while preparing it.

We are digging up the recipe in France more in a search for multiplying bacterial and microfauna base in the aquarium, with the “side effect” on the coral feeding. Maybe the big LPS are not getting much with the sole liquid preparation, despite the visible huge response, but it is possible to feed all the tank, from bacteria to fish, in making several grindings of the preparation, from small chunks to very liquid, to please everyone.
I really believe the liquid form is good for filter feeders, corals species that are feeding from dissolved organics, and bacterial-plancton.
