We’ve been using Dobie Pads to scrub much more than just the aquarium glass for years yet it’s a wonder how some folks still haven’t heard of these wonder pads. Your average grocery store chain carries 3-packs of Dobie Pads for $2 and what makes these different from the average aquarium-marketed algae scrubbing pad is the unique material covering the exterior. Not only is the 3M made material extremely efficient at removing the toughest algaes from the aquarium glass, it is also completely acrylic safe. When it comes to cleaning the glass of our home aquariums, skimmers, nanos and jsut about any other surface we never reach for anything but the Dobie Pad.
The surface of Dobie Pads feels kind of like shark skin in that it is extremely abrasive in the back and forth motion but in a side to side motion. The sponge inside of the Dobie Pads means that you can really put some pressure on the corners of your aquariums, wrap it around your return line and clean off just about any surface that is getting fouled by algae and other undesirable encrustations. The large reef display experts at Aquatic Art have been using dissected Dobie pads wrapped around large algae magnets to clean jumbo acrylic aquarium displays for years. It is also possible to order a larger sheet of the same material that covers the Dobie Pad in the Algae-Free acrylic-safe replacement pad kit from Bulk Reef Supply; a 9″ x 5″ sheet will set you back about ten bucks.
