Opinions on reefs and climate change is what they have in common.
Political comedian and talk show host Bill Maher talked about coral reefs on his show this week “Real Time with Bill Maher.” This short clip urges people to stop pretending that vanishing coral reefs don’t effect everyone even “real Americans.” We could debate whether or not what he says is accurate or just Maher’s political positions but I think the real story for us reef geeks is that it’s being talked about — by people other than us.
Another interesting read on The Huffington Post is by Dr. Terry Gosliner from the California Academy of Science. In the piece Gosliner talks about diversity, his nudibranch research (he discovers new species with some regularity), and how climate change is affecting his work and reefs in Thailand and the Philippines. Its always good to read reports from the field by people who have been paying attention to the same areas for decades. Something bad is going on, and its definitely worth the read.
