The Red Sea Reefer series is a new concept in aquarium products from the company that kicked off the upscale All in One aquariums with the original Red Sea Max. Currently, if you want to set up a marine aquarium you have the choice of buying an All in One aquarium, like the Red Sea Max, or you can piece together a lot of disparate parts. The Red Sea Reefer series are the first line of aquariums which fit squarely in the middle of that gradient.
Imagine the Red Sea Reefer Aquariums as just the tank, stand and sump of the Red Sea Max aquariums and you’ll get the basic idea of what the Reefer aquariums are all about. The aquariums of the Red Sea Reefer series are thick glass with a rimless design and high clarity glass in five sizes; a nano, 170, 250, 350 & 450 whose model numbers correspond roughly to the total aquarium volume in liters.
The tanks all come with a built in internal overflow box which feature removable pre-skimmer comb, a multidirectional return nozzle and most importantly, a drain system that has been engineered to be silent with a special mechanism to prevent overflows. The features of the Reefer series don’t stop there as each model is paired up with a sump of appropriate volume with a dedicated prefilter area and a constant-level protein skimmer section.
One of the more novel features of the sump included in the Red Sea Reefer series is a pre-built top off reservoir that sits just above the prefitler section of the sump to automatically make up for evaporated water. Auto top off is an important aspect of keeping a stable marine aquarium environment and we think it’s a bold and important move for Red Sea to make this feature standard in their Reefer series.
Finally, what is a great tank and sump combination without a killer stand for it to rest on. In this regard Red Sea will be offering a the Reefer aquariums with either a white or black cabinet stand with each one bringing the total height of the tank and stand to between 52 and 55 inches tall, high enough to be showy but still of a manageable height to work in. What Red Sea doesn’t include in the Reefer series of near All in One aquariums is anything that plugs in so no pump, no lights no heater and the reefer is afforded the opportunity to choose all of this equipment for themselves.
Red Sea has sighted an elegant middle ground between completely custom aquariums and full on DIY; and just as Red Sea was the first to aggressively market a thoroughly designed All in One aquarium beyond the desktop, with the Reefer series of aquariums Red Sea is also the first to deliver an original package of aquarium, stand and sump that can be the foundation of a great and modern reef aquarium.
Pricing and release date on Red Sea’s next big bold move has not been made available on this yet-to-be-announced product line but we should be hearing a lot more about it later this week when the line goes on display at CIPS in China.
