When it comes to one-man coral farming and coral collecting operations, few have had the staying power of Jason Fox and his incredible selection of diverse and exotic corals. The success of Jason Fox is not by chance, or great business acumen, but simply driven by sheer passion for the craziest corals on the planet.
Sure every region of the country has its share of coral gurus but few have done the due diligence like Jason of actually going to the reefs where corals come from and picking out the most iconic corals right at the source. Heck when we visited one of the largest coral exporters in the world in Jakarta they were dropping Jason Fox’s name as if we were at a U.S. reef club meeting.
We can tell you first hand that going to remote coral reefs or cherry picking corals from huge exporters sounds amazing and romantic but it’s also really challenging and requires a lot more work and discomfort than one could ever describe. But that kind of hard work pays off if you really want the best of the best corals for yourself, and to share with others.
Sure Jason might have plenty of coral “strains” that are duplicated elsewhere but within his Signature Corals there are some corals that we’ve yet to see anywhere else. Without further ado, here are our top ten favorite corals from Jason Fox.
The Raja Rampage is perhaps one of Jason’s most iconic coral strains, Chalice or otherwise. The picture speaks for itself and as far as chalice coral prices and novelty go, the Raja Rampage is one of our faves. The freaky hair is one of Jason’s coolest finds, with a burgundy red body and freaky bright green tentaclesPsammocora are gaining in popularity and you can’t do much better than this dark bodied corals with brilliant orange spotted mouthsThe Sunset Stylo is not a Stylophora, but a much rarer Stylocoeniella which is unique among SPS corals – it grows fast and encrusts about anything, the Sunset Stylo has extremely nice color contrasts between the orange polyps and green baseThe Anti Venom Favia is in a completely different league from the widespread war coralSuper nice corals don’t have to be super expensive and this flying saucer turbinaria is a perfect example. If you’re into Leptoseris you know that colored rims are highly sought after and yellow rims are much harder to find than orange ones. The slow burn monti is a very unique montipora which we believe is a specimen of orange montipora with a complete “infection” of green fluorescent protein that gives it an otherwordly glowThe Fox Flame Acro is an incredibly bright pink acropora with yellow tips that seems like it shares a lot of common color with the Ebeye Special from Kwajalein AtollThis UFO Chalice is a gorgeous example of a pastel colored Mycedium with cool green rings around each corallite
