We are living in a golden age of reef aquariums right now and despite the closures of coral exports from Indonesia and Fiji, we still have a crazy number of coral strains already in the hobby. However, for all the diversity that we do enjoy in our reef tanks, there’s still plenty of super exotic corals that are known about, but completely absent from anyone’s collections.
Except for perhaps a few pieces of Acropora speciosa & A. tenella that might still be growing from aquacultured colonies, these deepwater Acropora species are unknown to reefkeepers. Together with the two undescribed Acropora species and A. rongelapensis, these represent the rarest and most exotic looking deepwater style Acropora species – most of them are pretty colorful too!
It’s our hope to bring attention to anyone who might still have speciosa and tenella in their reef tanks and help them recognize how special these corals are. But hopefully, if we keep a keen eye out for them, these and the other uber rare deepwaters Acros may one day be discovered in future coral imports.
