Warner Marine unveils EcoBAK solid vodka dosing pellets

47

Warner Marine is releasing EcoBAK pellets this week throwing their hat into the solid vodka dosing pellet market. A main difference you’ll notice between the EcoBAK pellets and other products on the market it the small, rough shape over smooth spheres giving a more porous pellet with more surface area for the beneficial bacterial to grasp onto and thrive. When chatting with Warner Marine about the product, they indicated the polymer used in the product is not Polycaprolactone (PCL) that has been in use in other products like Instant Ocean’s Natural Nitrate Reducer but another form of biodegradable polymer that shares the same characteristics and completely different than the polymer used in NP Biopellets. EcoBAK is filler free, so all you are getting is a nitrate and phosphate reducing polymer that is consumed by the bacteria. This is the important difference between EcoBAK and vodka dosing, the carbon source never enters the water stream. Ideally the EcoBAK works well in a media reactor and can replace your GFO but could also be used passively in a mesh bag in an area of flow in case you’re running out of space or saving up for a reactor. It’s not necessary to fully fluidize the media as the product doesn’t slime over, so you don’t need a high flow rate for it to be effective. Warner Marine told us a flow of around 100 GPH through one liter of pellets would be a good starting point. The company is also pricing this very competitively and coming in below other solid vodka dosing-type products with a 250ml canister running around $19.99, 500ml for $34.99 and one liter for $59.99. If you’re interesting in picking up some of Warner Marine’s EcoBAK, check out your favorite Warner Marine dealer or visit the website or call direct for more details.

Great price! That’s about 40-44% lower than the NP Biopellets! The pellets look bigger and heavier though, so it seems like you need more GPH to tumble them around.

Is it me or does that look tasty? Looks like that Hi Chew candy. My question is whether a large skimmer will be required like with regular vodka dosing.

John, I don’t think you have to overskim and get a big ass skimmer. An adequately sized efficient skimmer would work well.

You folks are talking like these things really work. Has anyone confirmed that any of the SVD pellets are actually a benefit?

I have been using the NP Biopellets for 3 months now and am thrilled with this breakthrough in solid vodka dosing. I will definitely jump on Warner Marine’s product to try this on my prop tank. I do not experience the nitrate issues anymore since starting to use this new technology. If Warner Marine’s product acts in the same manner as the NP Biopellets, I will be switching to theirs for the cost savings.

@ Steve: Carbon/Bacteria systems are a proven method for maintaining low nutrient levels in reef tanks. Until now, the products have been limited to liquid supplements. The solid pellets simply bypass the daily/weekly dosing of liquid organic carbon & bacteria supplements. On top of that, Warner Marine is a very reputable company that I’d trust not to market a product that they hadn’t tested and proven to work.

From some beta testing quotes from Warner Marine (WM typically has some really solid beta testers):

**Phosphates reduces from 0.25ppm to 0.07 ppm in 4 weeks
**60% drop in nitrates and PO4 down to 0.02ppm in 4 weeks

Not sure who the testers were but just some early sampling of what the company found.

You may want to read up on a thread from Reef Central that discusses the similar product NP Biopellets. The OP started using the pellets since August 2009. Warner seems to have a competitively priced product.

I just received 1L of the new Warner Marine EcoBAK pellets to experiment on my personal 180gal display. I have been intrigued about the solid vodka dosing for some time know and with the a company like Warner Marine entering this market I just had to give it a shot. With work and summer activities my tank has taken serious neglect so effects of this product will be easily noticed and I plan to keep everything controlled for 4-5 months to evaluate this very promising product. If it works like I imagine it will this will be added to the list of common reef necessities like GFO and activated carbon. Jon of WM states the EcoBAK Pellets should be available within the first few weeks of August from his distributors.
