German marine fish breeder Marcel Triessl, currently residing in South Africa, quietly announced this week that Proaquatix is the sole world distributor for Albino Ocellaris Clownfish with the exception of distribution within South Africa.  No word yet on an official release date, nor on price.   No word either on distribution strategies either, or when the North American market will see its first albino clownfish.

Update: Marcel filled us in that about 75% shipped will be of the yellow variety, with 25% being the orange variant.  There is no genetic difference between these two — the color difference is solely a function of diet, based on whether Astaxanthin is provided or not.  So, if you buy a yellow albino, don’t expected it to stay yellow if you are feeding a high-pigment or color-enhancing diet.  Check out the color range in these amazing images!  Marcel also said it’s likely only a few weeks before the first fish arrive in Florida.  For those who are interested, he suggests contacting Eric at Proaquatics dot com.  Thanks to Huey for tipping us off!

Interesting point to raise – I don’t know even remotely how the Asian market values certain fish, but isn’t part of the culture that fish are meant to bring good luck, the rarer the fish, the better the luck? Of course, I also think there is a thing about “albino fish” in general that makes them more desirable (bringing more good fortune)?

Matt, somewhere in the world, I can’t remember where I read it, albinism is standing for hope. Funny enough, they were born at the cape of good hope. What you wrote about asia, that fish stands for
luck and fortune is right. As far as I know. In china it is a must to have a pond, tank or at least a water feature. Water means live.
    Clever people these chinese.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Things becoming more beautiful if rare and valuable.
Not for everybody, but for many out there.
So lets see what the demand will be, when the albinos reaching the shops.

Rich, you made a good point. These albino clowns are only available as captive bred.
The more popular these albinos, the more positive will be the environmental impact.

@MattP that’s the explanation we explain to westerners to not hurt their fragile hearts – that fish bring good fortune. The real fung shui behind sometimes has to do with the fish is going to take the blow from evilness so when evil comes it’s going to kill the fish first and not kill the owner (better the fish than you) – so I guess you can call it good fortune to the human … not so much for the fish. Of course in western culture, it will not be taken happily and will take that as it is consider animal cruelty so let’s simplify it LOL

As for rare fish = S H O W O F F = good fortune (of course, you have to have alot of money to show off) LOL

It’s very exciting that albino marine fish are finally making it into the aquarium hobby. With advances in marine fish breeding, it was only a matter of time. This is the first time any albino marine fish have been produced in captivity, and I’ve never heard of a wild RREA marine fish being sold, either.

Anything that generates interest and excitement in the marine fish breeding hobby is a good thing, in my opinion. It’s human nature to be fascinated by what’s rare or unique. That’s one of the things that draws people to marine aquariums in the first place.

Going back and reading on MOFIB about Marcel’s albino Ocellaris, its interesting how a year ago when pictures were first published, people relished over the idea of the marine hobby’s first tank raised albinos. Now it seems a lot of people disapprove.

Its like Felicia said, anything that generates interest in the hobby is a good thing.

MOFIB = people interested in breeding and a small readership.. makes sense breeders would be more stoked then a non breeder ;)

Reef Builders = people interested in the hobby with a mass readership.

I don’t see anything wrong with the albino clowns. As has been pointed out, albinism is a natural phenomenon. The fish look healthy and normal–no “stubbies” or other aberrations that shouldn’t have been perpetuated. I’m a purist who prefers wild forms myself, but even the designer clowns, if they’re healthy and a good normal shape, are OK by me for the reason that Rich and Felicia point out–they’ll attract people to captive-bred fish.

Knowing how long it takes for anything cool to come to the Australianside of the hobby and how we can’t import them from the US makes me think that clownfish will be going the way that parrotfish (freshwater) did about 10 years ago. I’ll just get the albinos in – and you guy will have blueberries in your reef tanks.

I’m actually more curious about the cocoas. I wonder how many ocellaris were lost to the premnas before she was interested – and if it could be done with the naturally occuring Western Australian black clowns that are so popular down here…
