Digital Aquatics teasing with new float kits

8

Digital Aquatics is teasing us with the new float switch assemblies the company is developing. Prior to this new version, they had your typical, small micro-switch float kits. This new version Digital Aquatics is making is larger and more robust and will most likely we best used in a reservoir or larger where there is more space. According to the information we have, the large nut on the right side of the unit with a rubber grommet to secure and seal it to the mounting hole. The smaller micro-switches are still rather useful for smaller chambers like a protein skimmer cup or as a top off for small all-in-one nano kits. No word on availability or pricing yet. Appreciate the heads up Michael!

Why, oh why are companies even bothering with mechanical floats like this any more?  Mechanical switches build up crap, have moving parts… WILL FAIL FASTER than an electronic sensor.  An electronic sensor for a $1 with relays and all can be run on 5-12v power and be made with a simple relay chip for less than $10.  Ive designed built, and use liquid contact sensors that are designed to cut out power to lights and other possibly dangerous electrical levels with 2-pole relays (those cost a bit more) that work on the same idea.  A simple two terminal sensor with some transistors is all you need, then run a 12v, solenoid, or AC motor off of that.  Its sooooo dead simple, why do they even make mechanical float valves any more?  I mean, this is digital aquatics after all… I would expect them to know this.

”Developing” – Really? How about finally finding them on eBay where they have been for a year or so…http://cgi.ebay.com/Horizontal-Float-Switch-Aquarium-Auto-Top-Off-/180430257210?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item2a027b3c3a#ht_598wt_1069

If this is what makes it for DA news these days, I am certainly worried about their future…

Nice find Terence.  Shocking, but not shocking (with DA).

Ryan,  We’ve posted that the ALC has been completed and will be release here next week.  Also the salinity probes have been shipping now for a few weeks.  It’s just a slow probe to make.

Just to clarify, we never claimed to be reinventing the wheel on this one. :)  We simply are offering a more complete kit that comes with all the parts (that are available in a lot of places) that customers need to make this float style work all in a single package.  We had a many number of customers that asked for this kit so we went a head and offered it.

Clearly there are DIY solutions as well as ways to put together other options.  This was relatively easy to make happen so we did.  The great part is it’s not a requirement of the system, so if you find you’re resourceful and can put together something that works for you then our system has provisions for that also.

We’re certainly not trying to rustle any feathers and don’t expect this kit will work for everyone, BUT some people like the complete kit option and this is perfect for them.

Hope that helps clear a few things up.

Then maybe you should have made it a standard probe that people can buy anywhere. Instead its some proprietary POS that has had your customers waiting for over a year to get it…..well, at least a working one. Truly sad.
