Red Dragon Acro coming to the trade in greater numbers as Bali maricultured Acropora carduus

The Red Dragon Acro is one of the newer strains of neato SPS corals to gain popularity in the reef aquarium hobby, first as a few singular colonies and soon to be a whole lot more through greater imports of Bali mariculture Acros. Unlike some captive strain names, Red Dragon Acro and Strawberry Shortcake refers less to a single strain of coral than a particular morph of SPS coral species, in this case believed to be a red thin-branching Acropora carduus. Hopefully with more imports of the Bali deepwater acros we’ll also soon see the ‘Blue Dragon Acro’, a blue-colored thin-branching Acropora carduus that is pictured after the break.

And I know people that spent $200/frag on the red dragon. Now it will be just as cheap as any other….patience is a virtue in this hobby.

I spent $250 and don’t regret it.  My Red Dragon’s branches (and COLOR) look better and it has been in captivity for a long time so no worries about dying.  Jealousy much? :)

I purchased a colony of the OG Red Dragon (Acropora halmaherae) directly from Reef Raft last year and it is much different than either of the photos posted above. Here’s a cell pic from the day I bought it… http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/reddragonu.jpg/

I agree with sniper. the corals above look too smooth. the red dragon is a walindii sp. this is based on the pictures and description on the aims website, my frag of the red dragon which came from jose casas who bought it directly from tony, and my maricultured walindii acropora
