Hands on with the Hydrowizard medium, a pump for the 1% of reefers

The HydroWizard medium is quite an impressive piece of hardware with an equally eye-catching spec sheet; neodymium, titanium, carbon fiber, bamboo, 120 watts, 15,000 gph and €1100 (~$1400). Before we sully up the HydroWizard medium by trying it out in some jumbo reef tanks we had to share with you this series of hands-on photographs of the finished, production version water pump.

Although the HydroWizard medium is way more power than 99% of reefers could ever need, we can only hope that all this raw sexy power gets condensed into a smaller and more suitable propeller pumps for the 200 gallon reef tanks – a HydroWizard Small. Check the break for lots of close-up pictures of the HydroWizard Medium and stay tuned for first impressions of this flow machine in action.

Considering I run 3- MP40s and 1- MP60 on my tank, I easily hit the total flow (as well as price!) as one of these.   Only downside this would be this one only be a single flow source (which might not be a downside)… oh yeah it’s probably quite a bit larger profile than any of my Vortechs.

There’s a little bit of 1 percenter in all of us :)

looks great, wish my tank was big enough to need one!

Perfect! Now all I need is a 10,000g tank and a giant wave box to house this in! I wonder if it has any modes like the MP’s or if its only up and down in power %.

I am using a HW on 80% power in a tank of 8x2x2ft with rheophile fish.
It is no problem, you just have to remember that our animals are not
used to the flow in the aquarium (they are in nature), so you need to
slowly raise the power over the course if several weeks. I would be
confident using the pump in a 4 ft reef tank on 40% power, but you need to make sure that the corals are well anchored and the animals get used to the flow over time.

Yeh, I would totally run this in a 48″ L tank… no matter the gallon-age. 36″ L might be a little short to fit the pump and your rockwork, but hey people get pretty creative. As Oliver mentioned, in the wild corals are used to a lot of current…. ever tried to swim out to a Pacific reef crest? :-)

I love the control box mount…

Hey wanna know why its $1,400? Because there is some fool out there willing to pay for it.. Sure you might say “but think of all the engineering that went into this…”…. Last I checked, power heads, pumps and propellers weren’t new technology. This is the same reason companies like Ecotech charge $750 for LED’s. This hobby doesn’t have to rob your bank account. I can guarantee that if you stopped buying everything everyone regurgitates at you, the prices would fall to a manageable means. I get sick of hearing people talk about how expensive this hobby is.. Its like gov giving people money to go to college. Why would anyone be surprised that college costs have gone up through the roof?! Same thing with the aquatic hobby. I can understand rare fish and corals being expensive just like a nice laptop for college will cost you but to make something that been around for ages seem like its the gold scrolls from Egypt and charge everyone an arm and a leg for it just doesn’t make sense.. Like I mentioned before, YOU control the prices. Stop buying overpriced crap and watch the prices come down to a reasonable price. How do you think retailers can discount up to 50% and still make money?

I guess you have to see this pump in action to understand it is well worth its price. One of the reasons they overshot their projected price is due to the rising cost of magnetic material, and some other production complications they had. Coming from the public aquarium sector, its a no brainer for us because this thing just blows away any other powerhead or wavemaker, it also moves the water differently. Much more natural action.
