Nahackyi angelfish video is the first of this isolated endemic reef fish from Johnston Atoll

By on Jun 06, 2012

The Nahacky angelfish, Centropyge nahackyi, is a super rare little Centropyge that is almost as isolated in its distribution as the resplendent angelfish. Coming only from Johnston Atoll, where permits are required just to visit, the Nahacky angelfish is super well protected since it is never collected and almost as rarely seen by divers. No wonder then that this video from Johnston Atoll is the first of its kind showing the superb Nahacky angelfish in its natural environment. It’s no surprise that the Centropyge nahackyi video was made by Bruce Carlson, taken in 2001 at a depth of about 100 feet and uploaded just a short hour ago.

Cool video, thanks for sharing. Always nice to see fish in their native environment to see how they act.

It wouldn’t be on any of my list of fish to buy if it were even possible though because it looks like a dirty Multicolored angel to me, and those go for $20 at my LFS. I would imagine if these were able to be collected they would run in the thousands of dollars per fish just because of the rarity of them.

Add another zero to your price and you might be getting close.

Maybe not the most amazing looking Centropyge, but the fish is fascinating, if only because it makes us speculate how this species came into being. Thanks for sharing!
