CoralVue just announced four new variations of the Reef Octopus Regal 150 and Reef Octopus Elite 150 protein skimmers that are available for purchase here in the US. The four new Reef Octopus skimmers feature variable speed pumps and are designed for in-sump applications for aquariums up to 210 gallons.
Loaded on each of the new Regal 150 and Elite 150 skimmers is the latest RODC-2500S Reef Octopus Variable Speed DC skimmer pump with pinwheel impellers. DC certainly has some advantages, especially in the skimming department as with AC pumps, restricting the flow (and making the pump ‘work’ more as a result) was the main way to control how much water the skimmer processed. With DC pumps, you can control the rotational speed of the motor and control and water flow rates into the skimmer in a much more efficient manner.
The four new skimmers are:
Elite 150INT Super Cone Protein Skimmer — Where space issues aren’t an issue, this skimmer will give you the performance you need. The Elite 150INT gives you more premium features such as a turbulence reducing cone body design, vented output valve with adjustment dial and more. (MSRP: $499.99)
Elite 150SSS Compact Super Cone Skimmer — Where space is an issue and you want premium features, check this one out. With an internally mounted pump, the Elite 150SSS is the super space saver design to maximize performance while minimizing the in-sump footprint. (MSRP: $649.99)
Regal 150INT Protein Skimmer — If premium features are less important than a budget-friendly pricetag, check out the Regal line. You still get solid performance but will a few less frills than the Elite line. You still get the DC pump and controller though. (MSRP $394.99)
Regal 150SSS Compact Protein Skimmer — Have less space in the sump and want to save a few bucks? Then check out the Regal 150SSS. Like its Elite counterpart, the pump is mounted internally to maximize sump real estate and you still get the DC pump and controller. (MSRP: $444.99)
