Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and that means six more weeks of winter. We have another video edition for you with some darker stories about the state of our oceans and reefs, but have some lighthearted and inspirational posts to boot. Happy Friday!
Time Lapse Images of Coral Bleaching
This video from the team at Chasing Coral shows what two months can do to a reef in the process of bleaching. By 2030, it is estimated that 90% of the world’s coral reefs will die, but we can do something about it to prevent the loss of an entire ecosystem.
You Can Make A Difference
If you need a little inspiration on making a difference with coral reefs, this is a great video by AARP on marine biologist David Vaughan. Vaughan heads the Mote Tropical Research Laboratory that is fragging corals and planting them on the local reefs. Some great quotes from Vaughan, “You’re never too old to dive!” and “I am not going to retire until I hit a million new corals planted back on the reef.”

OK, maybe this post won’t warm you up, but an ice fisher in Michigan captured this video of a large white fish swimming right under the ice that resembles a shark. Most likely this fish is a sturgeon, that can grow quite large and live a long time. In fact, a massive 12 ft., 1,200 pound white sturgeon was caught in Canada in 2012.
Fish Stomach Full of Plastics
This video of a fisherman examining the content of a fish he caught off the coast of Costa Rica. He thought the fish looked unwell and cut it open to find out why. Sadly, the fish was full of plastics and other man-made objects showing just how polluted our seas have become.
Cat Chasing Fish On Frozen Pond is Epic!
We need a little lightheartedness today! Enjoy!
