Like many of you we haven’t been able to browse corals for sale at our local fish store or at reef conferences like we used to, for quite some time. To fill in the gap we’ve taken to ‘browser shopping’ from many different vendors in this country and abroad, both at the retail, wholesale and export level just to see what is available in the current coral supply, and to discover what is being shipped and grown around the world.
The SPS lovers among you and especially the Acropora stick heads will no doubt have become numb to the deluge of so-called rainbow Acropora tenuis colonies on offer, each one trying to capitalize on the massive hype bubble surrounding strains like the Walt Disney & Homewrecker. We’ve got a lot to say about Acropora tenuis but among the offerings are a smattering of Acropora millepora, of which we thought we had enough variety until we came across this absolutely gorgeous colony from White Corals in Germany.
Acropora millepora: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About This Coral
WE’ve got a soft spot for yellow-not-green SPS corals and especially Acros so seeing this fantastic bluetip variety of yellow Milli immediately shot it to the top of our stony coral wishlist. We have no doubt that this coral was photographed under flattering lighting conditions, and WhiteCorals explicitly watermarked this image as being shot under blue light with an orange filter, but we don’t spy the kind of oversaturation and color imbalance that results from the improper use of this lighting & photography technique.
This Indonesian farmed Acropora coral is surely not the only one of its kind so we can hold out some hope of coming across this strain in our neck of the woods, even if it looks worlds apart from this nearly flawless example. We’ll certainly be on the lookout for some version of this blue-tipped yellow Acropora millepora but if you know where colonies-not-frags are available, be sure and let us know!
