When Jake passed away, a lot of tributes said he was a coral man, but if you knew him he would have just as many conversations with people about marine fish. He loved them all, especially the rare ones, and he had a particular interest in the diminutive but highly sought-after Liopropoma and Plectranthias.
Jake wrote twenty articles on Plectranthias alone, paying particular attention to new species and when and where rare examples of the genus turned up in stores. One of his favorites was Plectranthias pelicieri, and here’s one of his early articles on the fish when it showed up at B-Box Aquarium in Japan. There’s video too.
