UltraZone Dual from Ultralife Reef Products is a combination UV sterilizer and ozone generator

ultrazone dual uv sterilizer ozone generator

The UltraZone DUAL is a combination Ozone generator and Ultraviolet sterilizer all in one. In case you weren’t aware, most Ozone (O3) generators work by generating UV light or a corona discharge – the energetic light splits O2 with the lonesome oxygen molecules combining with un-split O2 to create short-lived O3. Since most ozone generators already have a UV light at their core, Ultralife Reef Products got the idea to harvest the sanitizing properties of both the UV and the Ozone in the Ultrazone DUAL.

The Ultrazone DUAL combination UV sterilizer and ozone generator uses an electronic 40 Watt VHO Ultraviolet light which produces 360 mg of ozone per hour. The Ultrazone DUAL will come in two models, a standard and a pro version, both of which can handle up to 1500 gallons per hour, but that kind of flow rate won’t do much for zapping fish parasites with UV light.

The Standard Ultrazone DUAL model allows for continuous UV & Ozone production or when used with a ORP controller, both the UV & Ozone production turn on & off when the controller calls for ozone. The PRO Ultrazone DUAL model utilizes a specialized switching configuration that allows the UV production to be continuous while an ORP controller turns the ozone part on & off as needed. Pricing on the Ultrazone DUAL from Ultralife is to be determined but hopefully these will begin shipping sometime this month.

very interesting and novel concept. Where does the ozone leave the unit?

From my understanding of UV, the type of lamp glass required to create ozone is not suitable for UV applications as it will lead to scaling on the glass, thus reducing the amount of UV. So, since this unit produces O3, it must be using the “VH” glass and thus is not going to be a viable UV option.

Secondly, UV is used to destroy Ozone. If you pass O3 through a UV sterilizer, it neutralizes it. This means that this unit will either:

    a. Not produce UV
    b. Not produce O3

The unit works with way. The ozone producing bulb is housed inside a glass sleeve. Air travels inside the sleeve and travels the length of the bulb producing ozone as 02 is converted to 03. At the same time the light from the same bulb passes thru the sleeve (creating the UV part) which has watering running the length of it. This water is now UV sterilized.
Both happen at the same time. Ozone is NOT passed thru a UV sterilizer as raj-007 mentions. You use this unit with a water pump and draw air thru with a venturi at the same time. Hope this helps.
