SunBrite Slimline S gets tri-color LED treatment

By on May 16, 2011

The new SunBrite Slimline S LED fixture is one sharp looking aquarium light and now comes with a tri-color LED mix. In the new standard sleek black finish (the company eliminated the silver finish), the SunBrite Slimline S features 18 3W LEDs split with 10 white, four 440nm purple LED and four 470nm blue LEDs. We did see the last iteration of the SunBrite Slimline S at ReefStock with a 12 white and six blue LED mixture and the new version will have the same programmable features, remote control and form factor.

The unit comes with a four-button fob remote that allows you to set and cycle through the eight stages of the lights. Having built in switching does eliminate the need for a controller or multiple cords and timers but you are limited to the preset cycle that ramps up the blue slowly from a 6 a.m. setting and cycles up to full blue and eventually all the whites over seven hours (lights come on at 6, 9, and 11 a.m. with all the LEDs firing at 1 p.m.). All the lights stay on for four hours before ramping down the cycle and then hitting some moonlight action at midnight.

The keychain fob remote also allows you to adjust the intensity of the different LEDs along each clock stop as well as cycle through in a demo mode to show off your new gadget. The Slimline ships with 80 deg. optics hitting PAR levels of 180 um at 24 in. deep. If you want a tighter focus and intensity, you can replace the optics with 60 deg.  versions that sell for $1 each. The new tri-color Slimline S will run $379.99 MSRP.

I love this light . MSRP is correct . It is exactly what I paid for it.  Everything is ditto what SB advised . The Par can be increased to 280 with 60 degree optics .

Roughly, how much area will this light cover?  I am thinking about replacing the stock lights of my RSM 130 with the slimline S

Doesn’t sound like a good light to grow corals with. Having 2 monochromatic colors, neither of which fall under the lower chlorophyll A or B absorption points (430nm and 453nm), and relying on the tiny amount the whites will put in that area seems to me it will not grow corals well at all. They should have stuck with at least a few Royal Blues for coral growth since blue leds are monochromatic.

    This unit will cover 24 x 24  .The regular covers  20 x 20 footprint .

    CaliReefer:
All LEDs are made by CREE. XP series. The Royal bule is peak @ 440nm to 455nm. The blue is peak at 465nm to 475nm. Every batches of chip maybe a little off. Just like CPU’s. Noone can control it. Stay tune for more info.

Are you saying the purple are royal blues and the blues are the cool blues then? If so, then I take back my first statement. There should be plenty of good light if the purples are royal blues. Unless they use a really odd bin# all the royal blues I have tested under a spectrometer have come in at 450-455nm. 440nm would be very low for royal blues.

It is a very sleek light and worth the price, especially knowing it is Cree LEDs inside which should make it very easy to change out LEDs if/when they go bad or one wants to upgrade.

Thank you CaliReefer. I personally prefer Bridgelux with the true 440nm to 445nm, it gives a deeper look to the tank.
You may change out the optics from 80 degree to 60 degree: 180 PAR to 280 PAR @ 24″ with water. We use our own custom honeycomb optics instead of Cree’s stock one. It has a much wider and even light distribution. Hope this help.

Looks very good and I love that it has more than just 2 types of LED’s, and the price is excellent.  I would love to see someone here or on RC show us some PAR #’s.
