Zoanthids with forked tentacles look like mini hammer corals

By on Sep 07, 2011

When it comes to corals, Zoanthids have the capacity to do some very unusual things, including strange colors and now we have some documentation of aberrant tentacles. The forked tentacles of the Zoanthids pictured here were discovered by Nano-Reef member nochickenstrips who noticed that this once-normal zoanthid colony had begun to develop forked tentacles on the inner ring or ‘skirt’. Several other members of Nano-Reef have cuttings of this particular zoanthid strain before it developed its forked tentacles.

There’s no telling what caused the sudden appearance of forked tentacle tips, the phenomenon appears to be duplicated all throughout this one colony so the can be propagated, but the mini hammer coral tentacles could disappear without notice. Only time will tell. Full documentation of the zoanthids with mini hammer coral tentacles on Nano-Reef.
