ADA Aquasky LED

ADA Aquasky LED

The ADA Aquasky LED is the sexy, svelte metal and glass LED light we always hoped that Aqua Design Amano would make. Last out of the gate for aquarium LED lights only means that ADA really took the time to get the ADA Aquasky LED right, even the stand holding up the Aquasky LED is perfect to look at. The 17 watt ADA Aquasky LED uses 30 x 0.4 watt LEDs with a color temperature of 7,000 to 8,000 Kelvin and it measures 280 x 68 x 9mm (11 x 2.7 x 0.35 inches). The elegant clear stand for the ADA Aquasky LED comes in a few different sizes depending on which cube garden aquarium you want to set it on.

The ADA Aquasky LED will be released in June for an as yet undisclosed price but don’t think for a second that this Japanese nano LED as ADA products are known for their stratospheric cost. Even if the ADA Aquasky LED is designed for growing freshwater plants with a warm color temperature, we hold hope that this light could be easily supplemented, and/or the design will be the ‘inspiration’ for reef LED lights in the future. It seems to me that established manufacturers are missing the boat on LEDs.  .4 watts/LED?  I’m pretty sure a couple of iPhones strapped together could put out more light that this thing for less money.

Stop worrying about wattage. It doesn’t tell the whole story. Depending on the LED, 17W of 0.4W LEDs will be just as bright as 17W of 1W LEDs or 17W or 3W LEDs.

What if those LEDs that you are saying are crap are actually Cree XM-Ls, just driven at a lower wattage to increase overall emitter efficiency? Would you say the same then?

It certainly works without a shadow of a doubt. Amano refuses to put his name to anything that won’t work to grow plants. ADA is one of the handful of manufacturers that actually uses their own product extensively, so rest assured the entire gallery will be retrofitted with these LED lights to grow plants in their nano’s.

I didn’t mean to imply LEDs themselves were crap, just that in general these fixtures are crappy in terms of total light output per dollar.  If I’m going to pay $10+/led I expect it to put out more than half a watt of light.  I understand a 3W led is not necessarily running at 3W.

You need to have an article or series of articles on Reefbuilders explaining all of this. People just are too fixated on the wattage.

Understandable, but this holds true in almost everything we buy. There will always be companies that charge a premium for something that is relatively simple in concept. They end up charging for the artistic design element, which is what you see here, as well as the new Sicce fixtures. Not everyone charges just a modest profit over the bill of materials cost. But there will always be people that will buy expensive products that have more form over function.

Not a bad idea. Might be something for me to work on here soon. I have a few that are similar in the pipeline.

Looks like a copy Vitrea LED lights.  That’s not a bad thing.  I saw the Vitreas at MACNA 2010 in Orlando and they were definitely the best looking LED units I’ve seen.
