It’s no secret that the marine aquarium hobby is changing at an unprecedented pace. Although the importance of the LFS has fallen by the wayside in many markets, the LFS is probably still the number one recruiter of new aquarium hobbyists. The role that LFS play in our hobby-industry is crucial as they are the first teacher for many budding marine and reef aquarists and without a good successful base of hobbyist to keep our industry alive and well, there simply wouldn’t be a big enough market to produce and support the sales of some of our favorite specialty and niche products like some of the higher end water pumps and the growing LED lighting segment. In this episode, Jim visits Age of Aquariums, a successful aquarium maintenance company and retail marine fish store. Many strictly retail LFS seem to be more vulnerable in this growing industry but as demonstrated by Age of Aquariums, the synergy between a combination retail and service company has it’s benefits. Whether you love or hate your LFS, or wonder about the continued existence of this quintessential part of our hobby, this 3 part episode is an informative look at what it takes to be an efficient, reputable fish store. Part 1 of this LA Fishguys episode is featured above, part 2 and 3 can be seen after the break.
