Rainfordia opercularis is a rare and cryptic basslet that few people will ever see in person. Not only are Rainfordia rare in the hobby, but they are also very secretive in their wild natural habitat, their flat heads being especially well suited to the tight crevices in which Rainfordia lives.
Last week Blue Harbor Japan received just the second Rainfordia specimen we have seen in the aquarium in recent memory, the first Rainfordia opercularis we wrote about was obtained by the Steinhart Aquarium. Although most people have not seen a live Rainfordia, we can all enjoy this first video of a live one from Blue Harbor showing the reclusive habit of this fish even under subdued lighting.
