This stellar soft coral reef tank really needs no words.Even though stony, azoox and uber-rare reefs are all the rage, stepping back with some simple soft corals is a welcome break and this tank shows just how nice it can be. The 40-gallon reef, a blend of soft and LPS corals, is a collaboration between a father and his 10-year-old son that is chronicled in pictures along with some great macro shots of the system.
For all of you interested in what’s under the hood, the two have used a simple 40 gallon glass aquarium with a DIY LED+T5 hybrid light. Taking a stock Current four-bulb T5 fixture (with two ATI Blue Plus and two GE 6500K bulbs) and adding 25 watts of DIY LED supplementation of Cree XP-G, XT-E and Osram Red LED mounted right into the fixture. Flow is created wtih a pair of Koralia Nano 400 and a Tunze SIlence 1070.20 return pump from the sump (loaded with chaetomorpha and other reef critters).
Make sure you go visit the site to see the chronicle unfold, check out the stocking list and read about the entire process. Kudos to Rod and Aidan for a job well done.
