Koi tangs are some of the most coveted fish available in the reefing hobby right now, with suggested pricing at an all-time high. We’ve seen a nearly all-white Zebrasoma scopas advertised for $32,999.99, followed by another at $29,999.99.
A white, yellow, and black Koi tang has just been rumored to have sold for around the £25,000 mark in the UK, and we contacted a supplier in Indonesia over a Dalmation tang, Acanthurus spp. who also quoted us $30,000.
But are they worth it, does anyone even pay those advertised sums, and do you find them genuinely attractive, with some appearing much more striking than others?
Sold for Seventy Pounds!
We’ve seen the price of these fish rise exponentially in the last two decades from just $90 (David Saxby bought his first one for just seventy English pounds,) to the five-figure sums we see today.
That’s inflation more akin to Bitcoin, yet the patternation is fluid on these fish, their colors do change, and one day they will die. That’s the only given in all this.
Do they do it for you? If so which one is your favorite? And how much would you actually pay for one, or think they’re worth? Join the conversation over on our Facebook page.
And in the meantime, here are just some of the most notable Zebrasoma aberrations and hybrids that we’ve featured here on Reef Builders over the years…
