Acrylic has always brought great aesthetics to reef aquarium sump design, but it’s also been hard to pick out a one-size-fits-all design that combines premium features and practicality, until now.
Starting at the dirty end, Trigger Systems Titanium Line acrylic sumps include either 4” filter socks as standard or a large custom-made roller filter, the latter of which instantly appeals to the fleece filter generation. The socks come with silencers and a prefilter pad but upgrade and get a fleece roller using a new motor controller with optical sensors and a screen as well as two filter rolls to get started. Why go premium and then create the chore of sock washing?
Or if neither suits go custom and drop in the filter tray (sold separately,) and fill it with your own choice of mechanical, biological, and chemical filter media.
Next, all of the plumbing fittings are on mounting plates, including the waste inlets, several individuals in the middle section, and the return. Blank plates are provided for all of these to allow drilling for other fitting sizes or to fill the space when the fittings are not needed. A nice custom touch, without the risk of drilling (and damaging,) the structure of the sump for any future plumbing changes.
Sump lids
The Titanium Line’s lids are made from warp-proof clear polycarbonate that is counter-sunk into the top brace. For dosing and ATO connection, there are six quick connect fittings. There is also a slot for a Neptune Liquid Level sensor (the best way to monitor water levels remotely,) and if not used it also comes with a blank plate to fill the space and keep a great look.
Moveable baffles
The middle baffle is moveable, height adjustable, and removable to customize the two sections. This is great for setting the space and running height for your protein skimmer while maximizing the other section area for a refugium or other equipment. The middle wall is also removable to create one large section.
Cable holders (not just cable cut-outs,) hold the cables and hoses neatly and securely while the four-position probe holder and heater holder are attached to the sump using magnets. This has been well thought out as everyone wants their probes in a different place and importantly, at differing water heights.
Disco fans will appreciate the Titanium’s built-in LEDs to light up the sump with multiple color options including color-changing patterns, remote control, and even app control. To configure the LED colors and patterns and you can use an app to do this as well. Third-party door sensors can be installed that will turn the LEDs on when the doors are opened and then shut them off when the doors are closed. This is typically done using an aquarium controller.
What we think
Acrylic sumps bring design flare and color to our reef tank cabinets but fixed sock holders and welded, immovable chambers can scupper the practicality of some otherwise very sexy-looking models. Trigger Systems Titanium Line has the looks but also combines well-thought-out, everyday usable features with the potential to upgrade or change the sump layout in the future.
