Halcurias anemone is the ‘Glofish’ of the cnidarians

By on Dec 12, 2011

Halcurias carlgreni is an amazingly bright neon yellow green anemone from the deeper cool waters of Japan. If you have a typical reef tank the Halcurias anemone is definitely not for you but if this kind of creature is interesting to you, a grouping of these together with some Cerianthus anemones would make an awesome flowery display. A meat-eating-fluorescent-flower kind of display which would look somewhat like Glofish except that these are natural and they would eat glofish danios if given the chance. We look forward to seeing the Halcurias anemones available for sale (from LiveAquaria) very soon, thanks to kevin Kohen for sharing his fantastic photograph of a Halcurias carlgreni anemone.

Hey Gary thanks for sharing – I knew you’d be researching these, glad to see you’ve found a modicum of info on them at least.

These are cold to temperate water anemones and will not survive no longer than a few months in warm water. I imported a handful of these around 6 years ago and none of them made it past 5 months. The longest one I was able to keep was 5 months and the tank temp was 72 degrees. The others died within 2-3 months.  These are great for cold/temperate water tanks, but do not buy them if you have a warm tank. Ideally they need to be kept at 65 degrees or lower. When they start to die the tentacles fall off and any corals they touch do not fair well. I know this from experience.

Just make sure you know what you are getting into before you purchase one.
