Reef Fishes of the East Indies is a new book from Allen and Erdmann with 25 new species (updated)

By on May 15, 2012

Reef Fishes of the East Indies is a new forthcoming book which will be a hefty publication on reef fish from Gerald Allen and Mark Erdmann. With almost 1,300 pages spread across three volumes, Reef Fishes of the East Indies will cover over 2,600 species of reef fish from the Andaman Sea to the Solomon Islands. Better yet, it is expected that Allen & Erdmann will include 25 new species in the ultra-mega fish book although we don’t know if these will be the original description of the said new species.

Look out for the Reef Fishes of the East Indies in June of this year where it will cost a whopping $250, on the same level as Corals of the World and probably the same level of must-have for diehard reef fish enthusiasts.

Holy cow. Thats an expensive book! But if it has as much info as Julian and Charles’ series, I might just bite the bullet.

the most exciting for me, Forcipiger wanai. There are tons of fish being discovered every year but who would have guessed there’s a new member of the Forcipiger genus! I’m really really curious to know how it’s going to turn out. Also Cirrhilabrus humanni?? Sounds cool man eagerly awaiting!

Now that looks VERY interesting and something I might well spend money on. Does anyone know details of the coverage, especially what they use as a northeastern border (Philippines or Ryukyus perhaps?) and the depth range (e.g. are species like Centropyge abei & Sacura speciosa too deep)?
