New Fluval Sea Recirculation pumps coming from Hagen

By on May 16, 2012

Fluval Sea, Hagen’s saltwater specific line of products that we first broke in 2011 is seeking to get a slew of new products.  Back then Fluval was perfectly happy with using this line for aquarium additives and marine salt. However, this year Fluval is expanding their Fluval Sea line into something completely different: saltwater equipment. Specifically, Hagen (the parent company to Fluval) is introducing recirculation pumps. The Fluval Sea recirculation pumps (aka sump pumps) (models SP2, SP4, SP6) which offer low heat transfer to energy consumption, external or internal use, “smart energy saving pump technology” (whatever that means), “alumia” ceramic bearings and threaded fittings that allow easy connections to your sump systems. Pricing wise, these products are slotted to fill the “budget” slot in the hobbyist community, meaning Tunze and Vortech devices will not compete head to head with Fluval Sea’s equipment line.

We have no ETA of when these are expected to hit retail distribution channels—like most new Interzoo timed products, the odds aren’t in your favor for a speedy release.

So, this is a budget ATB flowstar pump.

  • koraltek

perfect, a cheaper askoll/laguna pump to mod for skimmers.
    i can see the CNC’ed volute already…

Those pumps “look” expensive for being budget pumps

Isn’t the intake for this sump pump kind of high off the bottom of the pump?  Works fine if your water level is 10″ deep in your sump but what about those that keep 4-6″ depths?

Everyone’s a critic… Remind me again, since when did Hagen make crappy pumps? Did we all forget who Laguna belongs to? :D

Models like this, almost identical, is in offer in EU for years, I used them 7-8 years ago, is called Askoll pro models, forget the complete name right now, used 3000 and 7000 liters models, price was aprox 150-200 euro per models. If I remembered corectly.
This new models are probably update of those older models but more or less it look the same.

Hagen pumps made by italian mfg Askol (aka Aquaclear, laguna, fluvial, red dragon) Pumps are far from Crappy. They are up there with the best submersibles , but get little recommendation because they were mostly sold in past to petshops in Canada when reef stores really didn’t exist and Reef Keeping was not even close to what it is today.
I have my 800 Aqua-clear power head/sub pump still going strong for water changes never missed a beat and I bought that pump in 1984 about the way longer than any other submersible pumps I have bought.
I remember when Royal Exclusive introduced there Red Dragon series for there protein skimmers everyone was ranting about how great they were, I took one look at it and said to my self this is a hagen laguna pump, I called Klaus and he confirmed that it was made by Askol and he had an arrangement with Mr Hagen,to modify the volute for his Red Dragon series.

For me Any pump that Askol/Hagen brings to market is a good one and looking forward to more info on this model.

Yes, those pumps when used with original holder (and is very dificult to use them without original holder) have very high intake, due to strong suction power they create vortex and bubbles in aquarium when the water level in sump drop to 2-3 inches above intake, they need deep sump, 4-6 inches are not good deep for them IMO if you do not wont bubbles and vortex sound

As far as AC pumps go, Askol’s are still the best!
