CPR Aeroforce AP air driven hang on protein skimmer

By on Apr 27, 2012

Air driven protein skimmers are making a come back, or at least we want them to because there’s hardly an easier or simpler way to mix air and water for the sake of cleaning marine aquarium water. The AeroForce AP air driven hang on protein skimmer is a great example of great design and craftsmanship bringing this tried and true protein skimming method to the 21st century. If presented with the choice between a $180 Aeroforce dual pump recirculating or the AP AeroForce for the same price, we would opt for the air driven model for ease of use, lower noise, the sheer quantity and quality of the air bubbles and more reliable foam production as long as the wooden airstones stay fresh.

    what kind/size aquarium is that?

Wood airstones are VERY easy to make, DIY, using 3/4″ basswood. I have made hundreds of them. Maybe I need to do a tutorial on this, but all you do is cut the wood across the grain in 3/4X3/4″ sticks, cut them about 2-5″ long (however long you want it), drill a hole almost all the way through it, and hot-glue a small piece of rigid airline tubing in the end of it (1/4″ deep or so). If I remember correctly, a 3/16″ drill bit works fine for this. I drill mine using my lathe, which drills the hole dead-center, but that’s not entirely required.

Here is an image of one of mine that I made a while back on a Luft pump.

The great thing about this unit is, it comes with CPR branded wooden airstones and an air pump – 100% plug and play

i wanna try this with bog hog ceramic fine pore air diffusors and a luft pump,
i kno it would freakin rock.

It doesnt look very effective since there is so little foam over the actual water surface inside the skimmer.

Totally agree, the million air pump that comes with it is super quiet and great output for its size.

That doesn’t mean very much.  That tank it’s on is bare-bottom and I only saw 1 fish. Put it on a 75gallon with a bunch of fish and I’ll bet you see a ton of foam.  I have a Deltec on my 20″ low-nutrient SPS cube (that I rarely feed) and it has very little foam and it takes more than a week to completely fill the collection cup, but when it was on my 75g softie tank it had a ton of foam and I had to empty the collection cup every day.  If there isn’t that much DOC in the water for the surface area of the bubbles to attract, the bubbles will pop much easier.  If you want it to skim more and a little wetter just move the collection cup down.  Judging from the video, they’re getting dry skimming.
