Xanthic Acanthurus surgeonfish caught on video

The xanthic surgeonfish is the latest freak to come out of the family Acanthuridae. You’ve seen the piebald tang, the tricolor scopas, the aberrant scopas, the nearly all white yellow tang Casper but this all solid yellow Acanthurus is the first nearly perfectly xanthic fish we’ve seen in the realm of ornamental marine fish. We’re not sure exactly what species this xanthic tang is but we highly doubt it’s the Achilles tang that the supplier said it was. We can be fairly certain it’s an Acanthurus and one of the species with an elongated body, but your guess is as good as ours.

Funny how a guy on ReefCentral posted his oddball tang and it turned out to be a perhaps undiscovered species. It’s an awesome fish. :)

I think that is a juvenile orange shoulder tang – Acanthurus olivaceus. They are not common but they are not exactly rare either. They do grow out of this phase at different sizes.

I had always seen juvenile orange shoulders but they had their orange spot. I guess it’s possible though.

I don’t think it’s a juvenile Orange-Shoulder Tang. It’s pretty big for a juvenile, it looks like it’s around 6″. I think it might be a mimic tang. But, look at the eyes. Those jet-black eyes are pretty unusual.
